• California: Preparing Students for the 21st Century – Chancellor says Eliminate Algebra

If it’s too hard for the dears, eliminate it…

Eloy Ortiz Oakley, Chancellor of the California community college system, says:

Algebra is one of the biggest hurdles to getting a high school or college degree — particularly for students of color and first-generation undergrads. It is also the single most failed course in community, colleges across the country. So if you’re not a STEM major (science, technology, engineering, math), why even study algebra?

At American community colleges, 60 percent of those enrolled are required to take at least one math course. Most — nearly 80 percent — never complete that requirement.

See article here: Say Goodbye To X+Y: Should Community Colleges Abolish Algebra?

Ahh, the “soft bigotry of low expectations…”

    But not so fast.

Algebra is not racist, don’t get rid of it

    1. Kait says:

My mother is a full charge bookkeeper of 20+ years and has never had to use ANY of what is taught in Math 120 ie Intermediate Algebra. She already dropped Math 120 once and failed it the second time she enrolled into it. She is a middle aged WHITE woman. In other words, the nonsense that is algebra does not solely apply to people of color. Thus, I don’t think eliminating Algebra from the courses required to get an AA is a form of bigotry at all considering most of us really will never use it, especially since those that have a career centered around math don’t even use algebra.
